Adblock Plus, which efficiently removes ads from web pages is also available on Google Play since November last year. Together with Android 4.2.2 Google has introduced a security patch that annihilates Adblock Plus. However, it seems that Google discovered that this ad blocking tool was leaving users vulnerable to data phishing and theft exploits.

Adblock plus blocks ads by changing the device’s proxy configuration to a ‘localhost’ and so could other apps with internet access. This left users vulnerable so Google noticed the flaw and addressed it. At some point the matter of excluding the app from Play Store was put, as it faced a threat to the user’s security.

Google has introduces in Android 4.2.2 a rule to redirect proxy manually very time an internet connection is established, this way leaving AdBlock Plus practically useless. This is good news for developers that live from revenues they make on ads and bad news from people that hate seeing the annoying ads each time they use the internet.

You can manually set proxies and enable Adblock but that’s something that requires certain skills, and not all users are up to such things. So Adblock Plus devs still have to come up with a practical solution.
