Android 4.2 vs 4.1 - Samsung Update

The New Stuff

Samsung Update

Android 4.2 compared to Android 4.1 is an interesting story. They are both called Jelly Bean for starter. That’s probably because it’s basically the same Jelly Bean OS except it has a bunch of new features andunfortunately, a bunch of new bugs and issues, especially for the Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2. But that’s another story.

When it comes to present Android 4.2 vs Android 4.1 here’s what you have to know. First of all, let’s see what are the new features in the new Android 4.2. We have a newCamera,a newKeyboard, new Notification Panel,a screensaver like mode, for tablets there is a new feature that allows multiple user accounts, lock screen widgets, wireless display and that’s about it with the big changes. There are of course other changes in the apps, but that’s for you to experience and test.

Camera

Android 4.2 offers this new camera setting, that allows you to take 360 degrees photos. The mode is called Photo Sphere. You can take photos in all directions and then the phone computes them into one photo sphere containing all the surrounding area of you. You can of course share your photo spheres on Google+ and also in Google Maps.

Keyboard

The new Android 4.2 keyboard is called Gesture Typing. It is a Swype-like keyboard that allows you to write text messages and so on by simply gliding your finger over the letters. What’s new with Gesture Typing is the fact that prediction works a lot better. It can actually predict all the words in a sentence and you only have to select them. There have also been improvements in the Voice typing.

Daydream

This is a screensaver mode that is activated when the phone is idle or docked or when charging. You can select to preview photos, albums, Google Currents, and many others.

Notifications

The notification panel allows you to take action directly from it, in case it shows you have a meeting or a missed call. This is meant to keep you in control all the time and to make it easy to you to respond to notifications.

Wireless display

If you have an HDTV and a wireless display adapter you can connect your Android 4.2 running device and preview everything from the phones screen to the TV’s screen such as videos, Youtubes photos and so on.

Multiple users

This setting is only for tablets. In Android 4.2 you can now create multiple user accounts on your tablet to make it easier for more than one person to use the tablet. This is just as having multiple users on a PC. You can have your own personalized home screen without the other user having to use your settings. This is a great mode in case the tablet is for the entire family.

That’s about it for the Android 4.2 features vs 4.1. Of course there is also the improvement in how fast and buttery smooth the devices become when updated to 4.2. But you’ll see for yourself probably.

As I said, there are also a lot of reported issues with Android 4.2 for the Galaxy Nexus, but you can read more about that in this post.
